Visit Visa – in detail

Overview

The Subclass 601 Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) lets you visit Australia as often as you like within a 12-month period, with each stay lasting up to 3 months. Perfect for holidays, visiting family or friends, or even attending business meetings.

What You Can Do with this Visa With this visa, you can:

  1. Travel to Australia for a holiday or to visit family and friends
  2. Attend meetings as a business visitor, but keep in mind, it’s not a work visa
  3. Study or train for up to 3 months, but if studying is your main goal, you’ll need a student visa

If you’re heading on a cruise that stops in Australia, you’ll need this visa too. Just note that if it’s a round trip cruise starting in Australia, that time is counted as being in Australia.

Eligibility

  1. You need a passport from an ETA-eligible country.
  2. You must be a genuine visitor, meaning you’re here for tourism, visiting friends or family, or business meetings.
  3. You need to meet Australia’s health and character requirements. If you’ve had health issues before, you might want to apply for a Visitor visa (Subclass 600).
  4. You can’t owe money to the Australian government unless you’ve made arrangements to pay it back.

How Long You Can Stay
You can stay for up to 3 months at a time, but the visa is valid for 12 months. You can come and go as many times as you like during this period. If you’re here for long stretches or make frequent trips, we might ask a few questions to make sure you’re still a genuine visitor.

Family Members
Each family member, including kids, must apply for their own ETA – you can’t include them in your application.

Cost
There’s no application charge for the ETA, but using the app to apply costs AUD 20.

Applying
You need to be outside Australia to apply for this visa and it should be granted before you enter Australia. In most cases, you’ll find out immediately if your application is successful.

It lets you visit as often as you like within a 12-month period, and you can stay for up to 3 months each time you enter. Perfect for those who want to experience the best of Down Under!

 What You Can Do

With this visa, you can:

  1. Travel to Australia for a holiday or to visit friends and family.
  2. Attend business meetings or conferences (but no paid work or services).
  3. Study or train for up to 3 months.

If you’re planning to do any short-term work, or train in certain sectors like healthcare or childcare, you’ll need to consider another visa, like the Visitor (subclass 600).

How Long Can You Stay?

Once granted, your eVisitor is good for 12 months, and you can pop in and out of Australia during that time. Each visit can last up to 3 months, and the clock starts ticking from the date your visa is granted. Keep in mind, if you’re on a cruise that stops in Australia, the time on the cruise counts towards your stay.

Eligibility

To apply, you need to have a passport from one of these eligible countries:
Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom (and many more!).

Unfortunately, Aussie citizens can’t apply for this visa.

Quick Tips

  1. You must apply from outside Australia, and the visa is free!
  2. Each family member needs to apply separately.
  3. No extending this visa—if you want to stay longer, you might need to look into other visa options.

Obligations

Once you’ve got the visa, make sure to follow the rules. That includes obeying Australian laws and having enough funds to support yourself while you’re here. We also recommend getting health insurance to cover any unexpected medical expenses—better to be safe than sorry!

What’s this Visa About?

This visa lets you visit Australia as a tourist, to see family and friends, or even jump on a cruise. It’s a temporary visa, so you’ll be able to stay for the period mentioned in your visa grant letter, usually up to 3 months but possibly up to 12 months in special cases.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this visa, you need to apply from outside Australia and meet the following criteria:

  1. Have enough money to support yourself during your stay.
  2. Be a genuine visitor with plans to stay temporarily.
  3. Meet Australia’s health and character requirements.
  4. Pay off any debts to the Australian government.

What You Can Do With This Visa

  1. Visit family and friends or come as a tourist.
  2. Cruise around Australia (you’ll need a visa if your cruise enters Australian waters).
  3. Study or train for up to 3 months, but if you’re coming mainly to study, a student visa might be better for you.

How Long Can You Stay?

This visa is flexible, with the stay period tailored to your situation. Most people get 3 months, but if you’re visiting as a parent of an Australian citizen or permanent resident, you might score a longer stay, even up to 12 months. Just remember, if your stay period is up, you’ll need to apply for a new visa if eligible.

Can You Include Family?

Each family member must apply separately—even those on your passport.

Cost

The visa starts from AUD195. Keep in mind, you may also need to budget for health checks, police certificates, or biometrics.

Obligations

Follow your visa conditions, respect Aussie laws, and make sure your healthcare is covered. You’ll need to arrange health insurance before you arrive to avoid big medical bills.

Looking to visit family, friends, or simply explore Australia? The Visitor Visa (Subclass 600) – Tourist Stream lets you enjoy your time here for all sorts of reasons, except for business or medical treatment.

What You Can Do

With this visa, you can:

  1. Visit family or friends
  2. Enjoy Australia as a tourist or for a cruise
  3. Study or train for up to 3 months (but if studying is your main goal, consider a student visa)

However, you can’t work while you’re on this visa.

Cruise Trips

Heading out on a cruise? You’ll need this visa if you enter Australia during your trip. If it’s a round trip cruise, the time spent on the cruise counts as time spent in Australia. Your stay period won’t reset, so be sure to check with your cruise operator.

How Long Can You Stay?

This visa is temporary, and how long you can stay depends on what’s granted in your visa approval. We’ll look at how long you want to stay and why. We may not always grant the length of stay you request, and some visitors may need to show exceptional circumstances for extended stays of more than 12 months.

Extending Your Stay

You can’t extend this visa, but you can apply for another one if needed.

Eligibility

You’ll need to meet a few key requirements:

  1. Be a genuine visitor, only intending to stay temporarily
  2. Have enough funds to support yourself
  3. Meet Australia’s health and character requirements

Costs

Traveling In and Out of Australia

If your visa has multiple entries, you’re free to leave and return as long as it’s valid. If you only have single entry, leaving Australia means you’ll need to apply for another visa to come back.

Health Insurance

We recommend having adequate health insurance to cover any medical treatment you might need while you’re here, as you’re liable for healthcare costs during your stay.
